Early Learning and Childcare

Our Education Services has 110 Early Years Nurseries and there are also 345 Private and Voluntary childcare providers throughout the City (to include private nurseries, playgroups, child minders', Out of School Care and Crèche facilities.

We are aware of the Importance of early years learning and have all the information you need to make the right choice for your child. We offer a wide range of information on all childcare services (0-5 years) and support services for families and providers.

It is important to keep copies of your Invoices for HMRC/Universal Credit purposes.

Eligible 2 year olds

You must meet the criteria as stated in the GFIS website. Read criteria for eligible 2 year old here.

What evidence do I need to submit?

Most recent award letter for any of the benefits / allowances / tax credits stated in the GFIS website
Most recent letter confirming the child is looked after by the local authority or are subject to kinship care or guardianship order

A Blueprint for 2020 - The Expansion of Early Learning and Childcare in Scotland

The Scottish Government has set out plans to increase the number of hours children across the country can access for free at nursery
At the moment all 3 and 4 year olds and some 2 year olds receive 600 hours of early learning and childcare for free
Under the new plans, this will increase to 1140 hours, almost double the current level of entitlement

BBC Tiny Happy People

Glasgow City Council is in partnership with the BBC's new Tiny Happy People initiative to provide activities for Glasgow's parents and carers - check out what's on offer for you and your pre school child to enjoy.

BBC Tiny Happy People provide fun activities and things to do with your child to help develop their communications skill. Almost any daily activity is a chance to talk, bond and have fun with your child. Visit the Tiny Happy People activity page to see what's on offer.

The Scottish Child Payment

If you have children under the age of 16 and meet eligible criteria, you may be entitled to The Scottish Child Payment.

The Scottish Child Payment is already being paid by Social Security Scotland for eligible children under the age of 6 in Scotland. From 14 November the payment application will become available for eligible children aged 6 - 15 and will be increased in value to £25 per eligible child per week.

You should apply for Scottish Child Payment if you:

receive a low-income benefit such as Universal Credit, Tax Credits, or Pension Credit
have responsibility for a child or children under the age of 16
live in Scotland

Best Start Grant and Best Start Foods

Best Start Grant and Best Start Foods are payments that help towards the costs of being pregnant or looking after a child.

You can apply to Scottish Government for an Early Learning Payment and if your application is successful you'll get £294.70 to help with the costs of early learning. You can get the payment when your child is aged between 2 years old and 3 years and 6 months old. To get this payment your child does not need to go to nursery.

You can get Early Learning Payment for multiple children, as long as each child is the right age when you apply
