English as an Additional Language Service (EAL)

Get in touch

The English as an Additional Language Service provides support to children and young people with English as an Additional Language (EAL) who attend educational establishments in Glasgow. EAL teachers in Glasgow work in nursery, primary, secondary and additional support for learning schools.

Who can use the EAL service?

The EAL Service works with bilingual learners across all schools and early years establishments including:

Children and young people who have recently arrived in Glasgow from another country and are new to learning English.

Children and young people who have always lived in Glasgow but use a language other than English at home.

EAL Teachers work alongside other school staff to help children and young people with EAL to access the curriculum and achieve their potential. EAL teachers work with children and young people at all stages of their English language development. They work with children who are learning English for the first time and  those who have been using English for many years but still require support to develop their higher order language skills.

EAL Leaders of Learning and EAL Principal Teachers provide support with:

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for EAL staff, class/subject teachers, other school staff.

Professional learning and support with assessment and moderation

Curricular materials and teaching strategies

Family learning and engagement
