School Clothing Grants

Who is eligible for a clothing grant?

Families on low incomes may be eligible to receive a School Clothing Grant.  The award is given annually to assist with the cost of purchasing essential school clothing for families who are on a qualifying benefits. 

You may be eligible for a school clothing grant if you have a child that attends a Glasgow school, you reside within Glasgow and you receive any of the following benefits:

  • Income Support 
  • Income-based Job Seeker's Allowance (JSA)
  • Any income related element of Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Child Tax Credit (CTC) with an annual income of less than £16,105
  • Working Tax Credit (WTC) with an annual income of less than £15050
  • Both maximum Child Tax Credit and maximum Working Tax Credit and your annual income is under £6,900
  • Universal Credit (UC), and your monthly income is not more than £610
  • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Reduction (this is not Council Tax single person's discount)

You may also qualify for free school meals - see below for full eligibility criteria.

How much is the award?

For academic session 2019/20 the school clothing grant award is £110 for each child in each qualifying family.

How is the award paid to me?

Automatic Renewal

You will receive an automatic award if you meet either of these conditions:

  • You receive Housing Benefit (all children's details must be listed on the claim), or
  • Your receiveCouncil Tax Reduction (note, this is not Council Tax single person's discount)

Declaration Application

You will have received a letter from Glasgow City Council in early June advising you to return your Declaration application by 14 June 2019. 

If you have returned your Declaration Application and your circumstances have not changed since you received an award in 2018/19 you will automatically qualify for an award

New Applications

If you have never applied for a school clothing grant before, and are not in receipt of Housing Benefit or Council Tax Reduction (from Glasgow City Council), please complete the online form and attach evidence of your benefits to support your application.   Hard copy application forms will also be available from a local secondary school in your area in July.

To evidence proof of your eligibility, a copy of any of the following documents should be submitted along with your application form:

  • 2019/20 Full Tax Credit Award Notice (TCAN) showing a confirmed income for 2018/19. 
  • Your current Universal Credit decision letter or online journal showing 'your take home pay for the period'.
  • Asylum Seekers - a copy of your ARC Card or BAIL201 Letter or Serco Occupancy Agreement.

Please attach a scan or photograph of your proof of eligibility to your online application form or send a copy along with your hard copy application form. 

Please note, failure to supply the correct documentation will result in a delay in your award.

When will the award be paid?

Automatic Renewals and Declaration Applications

If you have supplied your bank details, bank transfer payments will commence at the end of June 2019.  Our webpage will be updated to show actual payment dates nearer the time.

If you have not supplied your bank details, a cheque will be issued to you in early July 2019.   Our webpage will be updated to show actual payment dates nearer the time.  

New Applications

You can apply online here.  During busy periods (July and August) it may take up to 6 weeks to process an application however all attempts will be made to make payments prior to the start of the new academic session.

Pupils aged 16+

Please note any award for a pupil aged 16+ will not be paid until confirmation has been received from the school that the pupil has returned to school following the summer holiday period.

How do I apply for Free School Meals 2019/20?

All children in P1-P4 will receive a free school meal and you do not need to complete and submit a new application form.

Pupils P5 upwards:

Automatic Entitlement

Existing Applicants - If your child was in receipt of free school meals in 2018/19 and your circumstances have not changed and continue to meet the eligibility criteria, the meals will automatically continue and you do not need to complete and submit a new application form.

Letter - Request for proof of eligible benefits

Existing Applicants - If your circumstances have changed, you will receive a letter from Glasgow City Council requesting proof of eligible benefit.  Failure to supply proof of eligibility will result in the removal of free school meals.

Free School Meal

Eligible Benefits 2019/20

  • Income Support or Jobseekers Allowance - please enclose a copy of your award letter dated within the past 3 months.
     
  • Both Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit with a household income of £6900 or less - please enclose a copy of your 2019/20 award letter showing your household income for 2018/19 and detailing your children's names.
     
  • Universal Credit with an annual income of £7320 or less - please supply a copy of your most recent statement or screenprint showing your 'Take home pay for the period'.
     
  • Child Tax Credit only with an annual income of less than £16,105 - please provide a copy of your child tax credit award letter for 2019/20 detailing your child(ren)'s names and your annual income for 2018/19.
     
  • Income related Employment and Support Allowance - please provide a copy of your award letter dated within the past 3 months.
     
  • Asylum Seekers - please close a copy of your ARC Card or BAIL201 Letter or Serco Occupancy Agreement.

Breakfast Club

If your child is in P1-4 and you require breakfast club and you are in receipt of an eligible benefit for free school meals below, you should complete an application form or from the school office and submit along with proof of eligible benefits.
