Big Surge in Street Play applications

Published: 21 June 2018

Glasgow is gearing up for its biggest ever Street Play weekend with 24 communities taking part in the traffic-free event, which runs from Friday, June 22 to Sunday, June 24.

As part of a national initiative run by Play Scotland, Glasgow City Council has organised free-of-charge road closures for all the local groups and community-based organisations who successfully applied to participate in the event.

Last year six roads were closed to allow Street Play to take place, but this year there has been a sharp rise in interest with events now due to take place all across the city over the course of the three days.

Street Play is normally held on the weekend closest to Mid-Summer's Day to provide the maximum amount of daylight for play outdoors. Organisers across the city are putting together a broad range of activities from bouncy castles to dance displays and street sports, but also traditional games such as skipping, marbles and hopscotch.

Following a successful campaign to encourage communities to take up the offer of free road closures, Councillor Anna Richardson, City Convener for Sustainability and Carbon Reduction, welcomed the surge in interest from communities wanting to take part in Street Play.

Councillor Richardson said: "I am absolutely delighted that this year so many more local groups and organisations are taking advantage of this great scheme. Street Play is chance to put the traffic at bay for a day and get outside and play.

"Street Play lets communities come together and enjoy themselves, knowing that is safe for children to play in the street. But it's also a chance for children to reclaim the streets for themselves and use their imagination to use spaces that are normally out of bounds to them. I'm hoping that people grab this opportunity for some good times with family, friends and neighbours.

"Street Play is all about freeing up space so that people can socialise and enjoy themselves. It's great that the council is supporting this scheme, helping to create special occasions for local communities."
