More Spaces for People on the School Run at Shawlands Primary School

Published: 20 November 2020

Work will be undertaken at the start of next week to temporarily widen an area of footway on Pollokshaws Road in front of Shawlands Primary School as part of our Spaces for People programme which is providing extra space for physical distancing to protect public health during COVID-19.

To create additional pedestrian space in an area that is particularly busy during drop-off and pick-up times, a section of layby outside the school will be cordoned off using water-filled barriers, to form a temporary widened footway. The barriers will also prevent vehicles from parking in the layby.

Supported by funding from the Scottish Government and administered by Sustrans Scotland, Spaces for People is providing temporary travel infrastructure during COVID-19 to make it easier to maintain physical distancing whilst out walking, wheeling and cycling.

Short-term measures across our city centres and neighbourhoods have seen footways widened at pinch points to ease pedestrian movement and make it easier to access businesses, community facilities and public transport hubs. Consideration is also being given to the positioning of temporary pop-up cycle routes to highlight cycling as an attractive, viable and long term travel choice for everyday journeys.

Details of the progress made to date can be seen here.

These additional measures can also be enjoyed by children, parents and carers on the school run:

Work on the temporary infrastructure will take place on Monday 23 November 2020 and is expected to be in place for a minimum period of 10 weeks, and will be reviewed in line with the Scottish Government's COVID-19: Framework for Decision Making - Scotland's Route Map through and out of the crisis.
