(a)by Councillor Malcolm Cunning

"Council notes the work currently being carried out by Network Rail to clear trees and other vegetation from railway embankments and other rail property within Glasgow. Council further notes that this work has caused considerable anger and controversy amongst local residents particularly in Conservation Areas or where total clearance of all mature trees has been involved.

Council believes that such controversy could be avoided were Network Rail subject to the same planning and consent processes as other organisations including Glasgow City Council itself.

Council resolves to write to the Secretary of State, Alastair Darling, and to all Glasgow MP's seeking a review of the statutory status of Network Rail and Network Rail property"; and
(b)by Councillor John Mason

"Many people in Glasgow have problems with addiction to substances like alcohol, tobacco, and drugs. Such addiction can often contribute to violent and other criminal behaviour. However, it is also accepted that addiction to gambling is a serious problem. Therefore, Council notes with concern the potential for a greatly increased number of casinos within the City.

Council instructs the Chief Executive to bring a report to an early meeting of the Policy & Resources Committee, summarising the benefits and disadvantages of more casinos in the City. Council would then be in a position to decide whether it should oppose an increase in casinos as it has with lap-dancing clubs".
