Lord Provost hosts tea parties for hundreds across city to mark monarch's 90th birthday

Published Thursday 21 April 2016

Glasgow's Lord Provost Sadie Docherty joined residents at a flagship care home for the elderly to celebrate the 90th birthday of Her Majesty The Queen today Thursday 21 April.

Meanwhile, simultaneously, her Bailies will visit nine other care homes across the city holding tea parties to toast the Royal birthday.

The Lord Provost in her role as Lord Lieutenant, Her Majesty's representative in Glasgow, will host a royal tea party for some of the 120 residents cared for at the local authority's recently opened Orchard Grove residential home. Several residents there will celebrate their 90th birthday this year including Margaret Grier on Monday 25 April.

The Lord Provost said: "I, along with many others, wish Her Majesty the Queen a wonderful birthday. She serves this country with great humility and wisdom. She really is an incredible example to us all and, despite her advanced years, continues to ably represent Britain on the world stage.

"Therefore I thought it highly appropriate that the council celebrate this historic milestone by holding tea parties for our elderly care home residents to show them how much we value them and appreciate their contribution to our communities."

At the Orchard Grove tea party staff will dress in vintage clothes and music and songs spanning the Forties and Fifties will form the backdrop to the nostalgic festivities. Staff and families have also donated their best china for the occasion.

The Lord Provost and her Bailies will also present every resident with a specially minted commemorative coin to mark the milestone royal birthday in recognition of the reign of HM Queen Elizabeth II as Britain's longest serving monarch.
