Following the recent introduction of pop-up cycle lanes across Glasgow, the north of the city is also set to benefit, with new active travel routes planned for Bilsland Drive in Ruchill.
These temporary cycle lanes will be created as part of our Spaces for People programme which is providing additional space for physical distancing to protect public health and suppress a resurgence of COVID-19.
The Bilsland Drive pop-ups, which stretch from Balmore Road down to the canal bridge, will run in both directions and benefit from soft segregation where possible.
These temporary measures aim to increase the practicality and attractiveness of active travel for everyday journeys, especially commuting, and encourage those who haven't previously considered cycling to give it a go.
To complement this pop-up cycle route, plans are also being developed for similar provision along nearby Hawthorn Street. Details will follow as soon as possible.
Supported by funding from the Scottish Government and administered by Sustrans Scotland, Spaces for People will see temporary infrastructure measures introduced across Glasgow to provide extra space for people to walk, wheel or cycle as COVID-19 restrictions remain in place.
Under the Spaces for People programme, we have already created temporary pop-ups at Broomielaw, Dumbreck Road, London Road (Phase 1 and Phase 2), Great Western Road (Duntreath Avenue to Lincoln Avenue), Gorbals Street, Cumbernauld Road and Provanmill Road - with many more planned for the future.
Don't have access to a cycle? Why not consider Glasgow's hugely popular cycle hire scheme? Operated by nextbike on behalf of the council, now is the ideal opportunity to try this popular mode of travel, with a promotional offer of 30 mins free standard hire for every rental.
Until March 2021, for casual users of the scheme, every rental under 30 minutes duration is free of charge, and for existing subscribers, this has been extended to the first 60 minutes of any hire. There is no limit on the number of times the offer can be used by a person. Find out more here.
Work starts on the cycle lanes next week, with an anticipated completion date of 13 September 2020. Where properties have a direct parking lane frontage, on-street parking provision will be maintained, as will access to private driveways.
