More Spaces for People Pop-Up Cycle Lanes for North Glasgow

Published: 7 September 2020

Following the recent introduction of pop-up cycle lanes across Glasgow including Bilsland Drive in Ruchill, the north of the city is set to further benefit, with new active travel routes planned for nearby Hawthorn Street.

These temporary cycle lanes will be created as part of our Spaces for People programme which is providing additional space for physical distancing to protect public health and suppress a resurgence of COVID-19.

The Hawthorn Street pop-ups, which will stretch from Balmore Road up to Memel St/Elmvale Street, linking to the shared path toward Springburn Shopping Centre; will run in both directions and benefit from soft segregation where possible.

Active Travel

These temporary measures aim to increase the practicality and attractiveness of active travel for everyday journeys, especially commuting, and encourage those who haven't previously considered cycling to give it a go.

Spaces for People

Supported by funding from the Scottish Government and administered by Sustrans Scotland, Spaces for People will see temporary infrastructure measures introduced across Glasgow to provide extra space for people to walk, wheel or cycle as COVID-19 restrictions remain in place.

Under the Spaces for People programme, we have created temporary pop-ups at Broomielaw, Dumbreck Road, London Road (Phase 1 and Phase 2), Great Western Road (Duntreath Avenue to Lincoln Avenue), Gorbals Street, Cumbernauld Road and Provanmill Road - with many more planned for the future.
