Youth-Led Legislative Theatre gets underway in Glasgow

An innovative NESTA funded project looking at engaging young people in the climate change discussion got underway this month in Glasgow.

The Democracy Pioneers project is being facilitated by Katy Rubin and includes collaboration with Glasgow City Council, Shared Future CIC and youth groups across Glasgow, YoMo, Glasgow Disability Alliance and Urban Fox.

Participants will take part in 6 sessions, exploring Glasgow's climate policies with decision-makers and then develop a theatrical performance based on key themes the group have identified which impact them the most.

A final performance will be given to elected members of Glasgow City Council in September and will help shape and influence policy related to Glasgow's recently adopted climate plan.

Glasgow City Council's City Convener for Sustainability and Carbon Reduction, Anna Richardson, said, "Finding new ways of engaging with young people around the topic of climate change is of huge importance, and we need to ensure that young people's views are represented in the coming years as we look to our COP26 legacy and beyond."

"Climate change will have the biggest impact on our younger generations throughout their lifetime. We need to ensure that our policies not only have their best interests at heart but that they also understand their views are important and feel listened to by decision-makers in local and national government."
