Families who have a child who is eligible to start the Primary 1 school term in August 2023 are being encouraged to enrol their child online during the annual November enrolment week.

This year it is Monday 7 - Friday 11 November and online applications close at midnight.

Any child who will reach the age of five years between 1 March 2023 and 28 February 2024 is eligible to start schools in August next year.

The process was moved to almost 100% online a few years ago to make the form as quick and easy as possible for parents and carers and allow them to do this from the comfort of their own homes and at a time that suits.

Councillor Christina Cannon, City Convener for Education, Communities and Equalities know that this is an important milestone in a child's life and can be very emotional as well.

Councillor Cannon said today: "We know that families will have been looking forward and anxious at this point in equal measures as their child reaches the age to enrol for primary school.

"But with many of our children now enjoying 1140hrs of early learning and childcare in nurseries across the city from the age of three, moving on up to primary school is the natural transition for our youngest citizens.

"Our schools and school staff are well versed in creating a nurturing and welcoming environment to allow children to flourish in the next step of their learning journey."

Parents and carers can of course choose to defer their child under new legislation and should speak to their nursery staff for details but should still register their child until they receive confirmation of their application to defer entry to Primary 1.

All information relating to starting school can be found on our website at Starting Primary School with general information on school enrolment, including enrolling a child from overseas at Enrolment

While online applications are quick and easy, families can also request a paper copy by contacting the council on 0141 287 8000.
