Children and families of St Stephen's and St Kevin's primary schools have been part of a consultation to rename the newly merged schools in Sighthill which will now be known as St Martin's Primary school.

The two schools moved to the new £22million campus in November 2019 and have been working closely together until the decision was taken in August this year to formally merge the primary school and additional support for learning primary and in line with the council's inclusion policy.

The school community then embarked on a consultation of three shortlisted names and St Martin's won with overall vote.

Councillors today (Thursday 17 November) at the City Administration Committee, agreed the new name.

St Martin de Porres is the Patron Saint of racial harmony.

Councillor Christina Cannon, City Convener for Education, Communities and Equalities sees the name as the start of the next chapter for the school and said: "The renaming of the former St Stephen's and St Kevin's primaries is the conclusion of a lot of meaningful engagement with families and staff and a new beginning for the school campus.

"The new school building is a modern, bright and conducive learning environment but we all know that it is the children and staff in the building which makes the school flourish, and I am delighted that the new school's name signals the start of the next chapter for the local community."
