In the Dark, Drive Smart

In the Dark, Drive Smart

Our Road Safety Unit is launching a city-wide winter driving campaign, 'In the Dark, Drive Smart', on 14 January. The campaign aims to raise awareness about road safety during the dark winter months when visibility is reduced, making vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists harder to spot.

The campaign includes a range of advertisements:

  • A radio ad on Radio Clyde.
  • Supporting ads on bus backs, digital boards, newspapers, and social media throughout January.

Campaign Message

The key message of the campaign is simple yet critical: 'In the Dark, Drive Smart.'
This message encourages drivers to take extra care and be vigilant, while also reminding pedestrians and cyclists to make themselves as visible as possible.

To reinforce the message, a short film has been created, featuring a Police Officer driving around Glasgow at night. It highlights the challenges of spotting vulnerable road users in low light and emphasises the shared responsibility of all road users to stay safe.

Tips for Drivers

With darker mornings and evenings, winter driving requires heightened awareness and care:

  • Be Vigilant: Always look out for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists, especially in poorly lit areas.
  • Adjust Your Speed: Reduce your speed to allow more reaction time in case of unexpected hazards.
  • Give Space: Provide extra room for cyclists and pedestrians when overtaking.
  • Stay Focused: Avoid distractions, such as loud music or using your phone, to stay fully alert.
  • Approach Junctions with Care: Slow down and double-check for pedestrians or cyclists when turning.
  • Ensure Your Car Is Winter-Ready:
    • Check your lights are clean and working properly.
    • Ensure your tyres are in good condition, with sufficient tread depth for wet or icy conditions.
    • Top up your windscreen washer fluid.
    • Ensure your wipers are functioning and your windows are clear of condensation and frost before driving.
    • Carry essentials like a scraper, de-icer, and a blanket in case of emergencies.

Let's ensure everyone gets home safely this winter by driving with caution and consideration.

Smart Tips for Night Driving

  • Adjust Your Speed: Reduced visibility requires slower speeds to react effectively.
  • Check Your Lights: Ensure all your vehicle lights are clean and functioning properly.
  • Keep Windows Clear: Make sure windows and mirrors are clean and free of condensation.
  • Be Extra Careful in High-Risk Areas: Pay close attention near schools, residential areas, and shopping centres.

Advice for Pedestrians and Cyclists

  • Be Bright, Be Seen: Wear high-visibility or reflective clothing to increase your visibility.
  • Check Your Lights: Cyclists must ensure their bike lights are working correctly.
  • Use Crossings Safely: Always take care when using pedestrian crossings, ensuring drivers have seen you before stepping out.

Stay Safe Together

Winter roads are shared by everyone, and safety is a collective responsibility. Whether you're walking, cycling, or driving, let's work together to make our city's streets safer during these challenging months.

Remember: In the dark, drive smart. Let's look out for one another and ensure everyone travels safely.
