Auchinlea Park

Auchinlea Park is at the edge of Easterhouse on the outskirts of Glasgow.

Originally 74 acres in size, the park is now a compact 20 acres due to the development of the Glasgow FORT retail centre which now forms the southern boundary of the park.

The park has a wide variety of facilities to suit all age groups.

There are two A-listed historical buildings situated within the grounds of Auchinlea Park with its formal and informal gardens.

Extensive and varied gardens surround the historic buildings including a formal walled garden, a memorial garden, extensive shrub and herbaceous plantings, a woodland garden and a bog garden which in itself is a recognised site of importance for Nature Conservation.
A pond which contains a Central Island for wildlife, the pond itself is a home to carp and perch fish and local anglers have landed specimen fish. The pond also features a level surrounding paved walkway offering a circular walk around the water's edge.
A play area suitable for all age groups. The play facility itself was famously opened in the early 90's by Anita Roddick of Body Shop fame who also gifted funds for this part of the development.

The park is open at all times however specific facilities within the park are subject to opening times.

History

Auchinlea Park is one of Glasgow's newest parks, which was developed in the 70's created from former quarries and wasteland to enhance Provanhall House, a National Trust monument said to be the finest and most complete example of a pre reformation baronial mansion.

Provanhall House, which stands in the grounds of Auchinlea Park, is an A-listed building which shares a central courtyard with Blochairn House, also an A-listed building.
Provanhall House, which is the older of the two existing builds, is thought to be about 500 years old - the exact date of construction is a matter of debate and some architectural features seem to show it to be as old as Provans Lordship (1471) or even older.
At one time, the estate covered an area of about 5,000 acres and stretched from Springburn to Bishop Loch, and from Shettleston to Garthamlock.
King James IV of Scotland was made a Canon of Glasgow Cathedral to atone for his role in the death of his father at the battle of Sauchieburn and as such was the Prebendary of Provanhall.
James IV was a keen huntsman and the Bishop's Forest surrounding Provanhall was a notable hunting area.
