Hamiltonhill Claypits Local Nature Reserve

One of the main attractions of Hamiltonhill Claypits Local Nature Reserve (LNR) is the superb views from Hamiltonhill viewpoint over the whole of Glasgow. On a clear day you can see the Isle of Arran 40 miles away.  At only 6.73 hectares, this long linear reserve is 22 times smaller than our largest LNR at Cathkin Braes (149 ha). It follows the course of the Forth & Clyde Canal from the Firhill basin to Applecross Street where British Waterways have their offices. The clay from here made the water tight seal for the canal. The 'borrow pit' has since become a wetland area and willow scrub used by roe deer and waterfowl, just some of the wildlife to be attracted to this former industrial site.
