£1 million fuel support still available to eligible families
Published: 16 January 2023
Families across Glasgow are being urged to apply for financial help towards their energy bills and can now apply for the one-off £49 fuel top-up payment online.
Parents and carers with children at home and who receive council tax reduction are eligible for the grant.
The grant also comes with the offer of independent advice on energy related issues.
Access to the support is available via the council's website - and residents who meet the criteria can receive the money direct to their bank accounts or by top-up voucher.
The fund, announced in October as part of the City Budget, is to give additional help during the cost-of-living crisis to families most in need.
Councillor Ricky Bell, Glasgow's City Treasurer, said today: "We are in the middle of a cost-of-living crisis, and we will do all that we can to support those hardest-hit by rising energy costs in these challenging times.
"Fuel bills are set to rise again in the next couple of months.
"We know that this is not an entire solution for households, but it will provide a top-up or allow families to use the saving on other household bills at a time when we need it the most.
"Since October we have seen a steady rise in applications to the fund, but we know that many more families who are eligible have not applied, and I would urge them to do so now.
"To make it as simple as possible we have developed an online form to fill in - and if you need internet access you can visit your local library to fill the form out."
Home Energy Advice Team (HEAT) will allocate the grants on behalf of the council, and will work with Glasgow Helps, a new council service offering free and confidential support, information, and advice to citizens, giving access to the right support at the right time and place.
