Residents' views sought on plans for more people-friendly streets
Published: 25 August 2023
Residents of four Glasgow neighbourhoods are being encouraged to share their views on early-stage proposals to create people-friendly streets that are less dominated by traffic.
- Yoker to Whiteinch
- Royston to Hogganfield
- Mansewood to Shawlands
- Pollokshields East to Gorbals
Funded by a Places for Everyone grant from Sustrans Scotland, the proposals are part of wider plans to create Liveable Neighbourhoods across the city, where daily needs can be met locally, active travel is more appealing and car dependency reduced.
Earlier this year, residents in neighbourhoods across the four study areas made suggestions for improvements in their communities. Now a shortlist of potential projects for each area are being progressed for further design development and potentially construction, subject to future funding opportunities arising.
City Convener for Climate and Transport Cllr Angus Millar said: "Rebalancing our streets so they are more people-friendly offers increased opportunities for residents to access services, facilities, and amenities within a short walk, wheel, cycle, or public transport journey from home.
"Shortlisted projects, as part of our latest Liveable Neighbourhoods plans that we are seeking feedback on, include reducing the volume of through-traffic in Mansewood and Hillpark, improving pedestrian and cycling links to Crown Street Retail Park in the Gorbals, improving connectivity through Germiston and the wider area, and reducing the domination of vehicle traffic in Scotstoun to create a safer and more pleasant environment for residents.
"As part of our citywide Liveable Neighbourhoods programme, we are looking at Glasgow, street by street, community by community, and finding ways to connect and improve our local neighbourhoods. I hope everybody with an interest in the latest areas to benefit will engage with this process and help determine local priorities."
Details of the shortlisted projects for each Liveable Neighbourhood and how to share your feedback (including workshops, drop-in/pop-up events and an online survey) are shown below.

More About Liveable Neighbourhoods
Our Liveable Neighbourhood Plans are being developed through community engagement. Over the coming years, these plans will cover every part of the city.
As well as looking at what is already in the pipeline for some areas, new ideas for making walking, wheeling and cycling easier will be identified and put forward for further consideration. Proposals could include measures such as widened footways, enhanced greenspace, and segregated cycleways.
As a key element of our Transport Strategy which seeks to create a modern, resilient and sustainable transport system for the city, our Liveable Neighbourhoods programme will focus specifically on our town centres, the everyday journeys we make, active travel and creating people-friendly streets which are less dominated by motor vehicles.
To ensure there is a consistent approach to engagement and project design, we have published a Liveable Neighbourhood Toolkit. This resource will also help communities identify local aspirations and consider how their ideas might be brought to life.
For wider context, our Liveable Neighbourhoods programme responds to:
- The 20-minute neighbourhood concept - where people can have most of their needs met within a reasonable distance of their home without needing to use a car
- The place principle - where people, location and resources combine to create a sense of identity and purpose, and is at the heart of addressing the needs and realising the full potential of communities
- The climate emergency and our net zero targets
Our commitment to 'Vision Zero' where no-one is killed or seriously injured on our roads, streets, cycle ways and footpaths.
