Secondary Enrolment
It is normal for children to transfer from primary to secondary education between the ages of 11 and a half and 12 and a half years of age. The Date of Birth Range for S1 pupils for 2025/26 is 1st March 2013 to 28th February 2014.
Parents/carers of children in P7 attending a Glasgow City Council Primary School: You will receive email communication with information on transfer arrangements in the November prior to your child's entry to secondary school in August. This email will contain a link to the online registration form to register your child for their catchment secondary school.
How do I know which school my child will be attending?
The email communication which will be sent to you in November will provide details of the S1 transfer process. This information will give details of procedures involved in the transfer and the school to which your child has the right to transfer, which is the catchment secondary school for their current address.
Included in the email will be a link to an online form for you to confirm the transfer details and enrol your child for S1.
Does my child have to transfer to the named secondary school?
No, the Education (Scotland) Act 1980, as amended, gives you the right as a parent to make a placing request for your child to attend a school of your choice.
Placing Requests
Some parents may wish to make a request to place their child in another school. Such a request is referred to as a Placing Request. It is essential however those parents must also register their child for Education in their catchment Secondary school initially and before submitting their Placing Request form.
To make a placing request, you are required to submit a placing request application form. The easiest way to do this is to use the link which will be provided in the email communication sent to you regarding your child's transfer to Secondary school.
If you have more than one child, you must submit a separate Placing Request application for each child. If you wish to apply for more than one school, you must indicate your priority choice of schools on the form. Glasgow City Council will make a decision on your first choice of school. Only after a decision to refuse the placing request on the first choice has been made will other establishments then be considered. If the priority choice is granted the remaining choice of schools are automatically withdrawn.
