Drummond, Alexander Gilmour (1895 - 1918)

Alexander was the fifth son of Mr and Mrs Mark Drummond, 10 Walmer Crescent, Ibrox, Glasgow.

On leaving school he obtained a post in the City Assessor`s Office, which he left in 1915.

He left in 1915 to join the Highland Light Infantry. He trained at Gailes and then in April 1916, joined the 17th Highland Light Infantry in France. In July of that year he was wounded in the Somme Battle, France, on his recovery he obtained his commission in 1917 and was gazetted to the 6th Black Watch.

In September he was awarded the Military Cross for conduct thus described in the Gazette notice: "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He held a position for six and a half hours, although four times heavily counter-attacked and, in spite of being gassed, succeeded in beating off these attacks with very heavy loss to the enemy, until finally compelled to withdraw owing to the retirement of the troops on his flank and the overwhelming superiority of the enemy. His tenacity and fearless courage deserve the highest praise."

He was reported missing from 22nd March 1918 but word afterwards received from him in Germany stating that he had been wounded. As a result of his wounds he died on 5th April 1918, at Reserve Lazaret, Münster, Westphalia, Germany. He was 23 years of age.
