George Waldo Allan was a second-year student at the University of Glasgow studying medicine.

According to his father, Reverend Charles Allan of Duneira, Greenock, Allan was 'mentioned in officers' letters for bravery in going to the help of wounded comrades and said by his own comrades to have earned the VC "half a dozen times over"'.
