James enlisted in the 5th (Reserve) Battalion of the Argylls. After a short period of training he was drafted to France in September 1918 and went into action on the Cambrai front, France. He was wounded on 11 October 1918 on the Cambrai front, France, and died on the 13 October 1918 in the 18th Casualty Clearing Station and buried in Rocquigny Road Military Cemetery, France. He was 22 years old.
James was the son of James and Agnes Veitch Barrie, of West Henderston, Cardonald, Glasgow.
