Glen, James (1891 - 1918)

James was the second son of Mr John Glen who resided at 14 Hillington Gardens, Cardonald, Glasgow. He was a teacher in Lambhill Street School, Glasgow.
On the 16 September 1914, Captain Glen enlisted in the 17th Highland Light Infantry. After training at Troon, Ayrshire he went to France in November 1915. On the 4 August 1916 he was gazetted to the 5th Scottish Rifles but on returning to France was attached to the 2nd Scottish Rifles. In July 1917, for gallantry, he was promoted on the field to the rank of Captain.
Towards the end of the year he was transferred to the Royal Air Force where he qualified first as Observer and then as Pilot Scout. On the 1 July 1918 he crossed to France and was attached to the 70th Squadron Royal Air Force. He went on patrol to attack enemy balloons on the 16 September 1918 and failed to return.
