In July 1915, at Vancouver, Oswald joined the 62nd Battalion of the Canadians and was later transferred to the 3rd Canadian Pioneers with whom he went to France in March 1916. On 1 October 1916, he was killed in action at Courcelette on the Somme, France. Private Hay was then only 18 years old.

Oswald was the son of Mr and Mrs John Hay, late of 17 Dunolly Gardens, Ibrox, Glasgow. He left Bellahouston Academy in 1907. In the following year the family went to Vancouver where he continued his education. He became a sergeant in the St. Andrew's Church Boys Brigade and in the 72nd Seaforth Highlanders Cadet Battalion. Before he enlisted he had been for a short time in the Analytical Department of the B.C. Electric Company but had still a year to go of his High School Course for Matriculation.
