John was called up for service in June 1916. He joined the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and after a period of training was sent to France in 1917. He was invalided home and was finally discharged in November 1917. He never regained his health and after being 5 months a complete invalid he passed away on 31 August 1918. He was 27 years of age.
John was the only son Mr John Bell, provision merchant, Fleurs Avenue, Dumbreck, and Mrs Bell. He lived at 166 Great George Street, Hillhead, Glasgow. As the only son, on his father's death he took charge of the business and carried it on, until he was called up.
