James was the son of Mr and Mrs Johnstone, Barraston, Torrance, and 8 Cecil Place, Ibrox, Glasgow.
He was in his father's business - Messrs Johnstone, Arrol & Co., oil merchants, Carlton Court, Glasgow. He took part in the South African War in which he was twice wounded.
On the outbreak of war he joined the Liverpool Scottish.
He was killed in action at Hooge, Belgium, 16th June 1915. He was 35 years of age.
