Harry joined the 1/3rd Scottish Horse whilst on holiday on Islay on the day the regiment was mobilised in August 1914. After training for some time in England he went with his regiment to Gallipoli, Turkey, where he contracted dysentery. He was removed to No.15 General Hospital, Alexandria, Egypt, and died there on 19 December 1915.
Harry was the son of Captain James and Marion Lawson who resided at 8 Cecil Place, Glasgow. He was an all-round athlete and excelled in boxing and swimming. He was also well known as an amateur oarsman and in 1914 was joint holder of the Scottish Pair-Oars Championship.
