In March 1916 Hugh joined the Clyde Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and received his training at Crystal Palace and Chatham, United Kingdom. His ship, HMS Cheerful, a destroyer, was on patrol in the Forth and afterwards at Lerwick, Shetland Isles.
Returning from the patrol on 30 June 1917 and in sight of Lerwick harbour, she was struck by a mine or torpedo and sank. Bodin was 20 years of age.
Hugh was the youngest son of Mr and Mrs Bodin, 5 Osborne Place, Govan, Glasgow. He intended to become a doctor but left school in June 1915 to work in Harland & Wolff's, shipping company.
