John was the son of Mr and Mrs Charles Campbell, 38 Greenhead Drive, South Govan, Glasgow.
Lance Corporal Campbell was a good footballer and athlete. He excelled as a runner and was chosen to represent Bellahouston Academy at other sports meetings. He was of a genial and sunny nature.
He left school in November 1915 to join the Glasgow Highlanders. In July 1916 he went to France in the Lewis Gun section of the Battalion. He did ten months of active service.
He was killed by shell fire on 20th May 1917 at Fontaine les Croisilles, near Arras, France.
