James enlisted in "A" Training Battalion in February 1917. After training at Montrose and Cromer he was sent to France in January 1918. During the German offensive between 21st and 27th March 1918, he was killed in action but exact details have never been received. He was only 19 years old.
James was the son of Mr and Mrs James Chaplin who resided at Clarion Cottage, Cardonald, Glasgow. Private Chaplin was a medical student at the University of Glasgow . He was a lad of most genial disposition and an enthusiastic player in our school football team.
