John was the only son of Mr and Mrs J.R. Couper, 9 Osborne Place, Govan, Glasgow.
He was for some years a member of Glasgow University Officer Training Corps. Captain Couper was a teacher in Rosevale Street School, Partick.
Joining the 7th Cameron Highlanders at the outbreak of the war he was gazetted six weeks later to the Loyal North Lancashires. He proceeded to France over a year before his death and took part in much heavy fighting, being wounded in the head and arm. For several months he had been acting as temporary Captain.
He was killed in action at Beaumont Hamel, France, on 15th November 1916.
