William was born Glasgow, son of Mary Begg Rafferty (née Black) and the late Andrew Rafferty of 1 Catherine Place, Anderston, Glasgow.

He enlisted in Glasgow and died of Wounds on 11th November 1917

William is buried in Deir El Belah War Cemetery, Palestine.
