John was mobilised on 4 August 1914 and proceeded for training to the Crystal Palace, London. In the spring of 1915 he left with the famous Naval Division for Gallipoli, Turkey. On 4 June 1915 he fell in an attack on the Turkish trenches.
John was the only son of Mr James Richmond, Manager of the North British Tube Works and Mrs Richmond who resided at 95 Maxwell Drive, Pollokshields, Glasgow. On leaving school he became an apprentice engineer with Messrs Dunsmuir & Jackson and had almost completed his apprenticeship when war broke out.
Like his father, Lieutenant Richmond took an active interest in the Clyde Division, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and rose to be an officer in the Govan Section. He was liked by all who knew him. He took part in all the sports and games at the school and played football regularly for the First XI team.
