James was the son of Mr Robertson, 4 Copland Road, Govan, Glasgow.
On leaving school he studied to be a teacher and was a pupil teacher in Lambhill Street School and in Broomloan Road School. When he finished his training he held appointments at Doune and Maybole and was then appointed English Master in Baillieston Public School.
He enlisted in the 16th Highland Light Infantry in October 1914 and after training was sent to France in November 1915.
He was killed in action near Thiepval, France, on 23rd April 1916 and was buried at Bouzincourt near Albert.
