George Lyall MacDonald was born in Glasgow in 1877, the son of Walter MacDonald, a confectioner, and his wife Jeanie. He worked for The Royal Bank of Scotland.
During the First World War MacDonald left his job at the bank's Glasgow Sauchiehall Street branch to go on military service, becoming a Private in the King's Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in Belgium on 10 April 1918.
