Peter joined the Australian Forces in October 1915. He was in Egypt for about a year and was then sent to France. At the time of his death he was acting as a signaller for his battery. He was killed in action near Hooge, Belgium, on the 26 October 1917 by the explosion of a shell.

Peter was the son of Captain Alexander and Margaret Ferns MacDonald, original from Kildonan Terrace, Ibrox, Glasgow. While at Bellahouston Academy he took a great interest in swimming and was successful in winning many prizes. In 1908 the family went to Australia where Peter became manager of a Wood Company.
