MacFarlane, John 14221 (1896 - 1917)
Private, 9th Bn. Higland Light Infantry
Buried at Oxford Road Cemetery
Commemorated at Bellahouston Academy Roll of Honour
In 1915 John joined the Glasgow Highlanders. He received his training with the 2nd Battalion of that regiment at Dunfermline and afterwards at Maldon, Essex. In 1916 he went to France with his regiment. He was in France for one year, taking part in many engagements. Just within a fortnight of his first leave, he was reported wounded and missing at Polygon Wood (Belgium) on 25 September 1917. After a year's suspense he was officially presumed killed by the shelling of a dressing station to which, it is thought, he must have been taken. He was 22 years old.
John was the son of John and Elizabeth Macfarlane who resided at 21, Abercorn Street, Glasgow.
