John Robertson Macfarlane was born in Eastwood, Renfrewshire, in 1899, the son of John Macfarlane, a laundryman, and his wife Helen. In October 1914 he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Glasgow St Enoch Square branch.
During the First World War Macfarlane joined the army, serving as a Private, initially in the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) and later in the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). He was killed in action on the Western Front on 25 April 1918. He was 19 years old.
