Alexander McColl was born 20 December 1884 at 64 Plantation Street, Govan, Glasgow. He was the son of Henry and Margaret McColl (nee Kerr), and the husband of Lily Joan McColl (nee Mann). At the time of his death his two children Henry (Harry) was 7 years and Margaret was two.
He was a private with the 1st Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders. He was killed in action on Wednesday 26 August, 1914 at age 29 and had only been in France for only 3 weeks.
Alexander is commemorated at La Ferte-sous-Jouarre Memorial in France. La Ferte-sous-Jouarre is a small town 66 kilometres to the East of Paris, and the Memorial is situated in a small park on the South bank of the River Marne, just off the main road to Paris.
Before the war, Alexander was a Rivetter with Messrs. Barclay Curle Company in Glasgow and was called up at the outbreak
of war. Alexander's parting words to his Family were "I'll be back home by Christmas". Sadly that was not the case.
