Matthew was born in Glasgow c1881, son of William McKendrick of Langside, Glasgow. He married Ivy H McKendrick in Johannesburg.
He enlisted 5th August 1915 and was reported as wounded Prisoner of War on the 24th April 1918.
He was awarded Military Medal, gazetted 9th July 1917, and also the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
Matthew died aged 36 whilst a POW, presumed in Germany, on Saturday 25th May 1918.
CWGC states he was buried Le Cateau Cemetery, Nord, France. Notes state that the majority of graves in this plot are those of British dead buried by the Germans.
