Archibald was the eldest son of Captain and Mrs McKillop, 4 Jane Street, Bellahouston, Glasgow.
He left school in March 1913. He then served his apprenticeship with the Allan Line Steamship Company.
He was three times torpedoed, first on board Her Majesty´s Trawlers "Monmouth", while acting as Third Officer in November 1916. After getting his Second Officer's certificate in April 1917 he joined the SS "Carthaginian" and was torpedoed off Ireland on his first voyage.
He joined the SS "Pomeranian" and whilst sailing from London to Plymouth to join a convoy, the ship was torpedoed and lost on 15th April 1918.
