John was the only son of Mr and Mrs William Melvin, 9 Havelock Street, Glasgow.
He was 32 years of age and had been Second Engineer on the Anchor Liner "Tuscania".
On the outbreak of war his desire to see even more active service induced him to leave the Mercantile Marine.
He was killed on board HMS "Partridge" at the Dardanelles, Turkey, on 29th September 1915.
