John was the son of Mrs Miller, 18 Dowanhill Street, Partick, Glasgow.
After leaving school he went to London as a clerk in the Civil Service but returning later to a Glasgow office.
He joined the 16th Highland Light Infantry in 1914. He trained in Scotland and England and went to France with the first draft. After seeing much fighting he was invalided home.
On returning to his regiment he was transferred to the 17th Highland Light Infantry. At the beginning of 1917 he was recommended for his commission. Gazetted three months later and attached to the 3rd Highland Light Infantry in Edinburgh, he was sent to France with a draft of the 17th Highland Light Infantry.
He was killed at Passchendaele Ridge, Belgium, on 2nd December 1917.
