This family studio portrait of the Moffat family was taken on 20 May 1915. It is part of the collection of the Australia War Memorial.

It features Private John Moffat, 31st Battalion, Australian Infantry, Australian Impeerial Force of East Melbourne, Vic, originally of Glasgow, Scotland. Private Moffat enlisted on 19 January 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard either HMAT Bakara on 5 November 1915 or HMAT Wandilla on 9 November 1915.

He later served as a corporal and was killed in action on 18 January 1917, near Bapaume, France. His two brothers, Robert and William, also enlisted, with William were also killed in action.

John was the son of James and Margaret Moffat; husband of E. Moffat, of 22, Glenfarne St., Bexley, New South Wales. Native of Glasgow, Scotland.
