In October 1915 John enlisted in the Lovat Scouts and soon gained the rank of Sergeant. After training with the Lovat Scouts for some time he was transferred to the 6th Cameron Highlanders and as Lance Corporal he went with them to France on 30 August 1916 and saw much active service there during the following winter. On the 11 April 1917 he was killed in action at Arras, France, at the age of 20.
On leaving Bellahouston Academy in June 1911, John served his apprenticeship as an electrical engineer with Messrs Loudon Bros. & Co. and was afterwards employed as a draughtsman with Messrs Stevenson & M'Guffie, Consulting Engineers. Jack Muir was one of the finest swimmers in the history of Bellahouston Academy and won many prizes in his favourite sport.
