Murray, John (1888 - 1916)
Engineer Lieutenant, Royal Navy, H.M.T.B. "No. 11"
Buried at Chatham Naval Memorial
Commemorated at Hillhead High School
The report that Engineer-Lieutenant John Murray had been lost at sea on 7th March, 1916, caused very real sorrow among a wide circle of friends. He was a man of strong and attractive personality, and had before him a career of very bright promise when he was cut down thus early.
On leaving School he entered Glasgow University, where after a distinguished record he graduated Bachelor of Science in Engineering. His engineering apprenticeship was served with Messrs. David Rowan & Co. On its completion he received an appointment in Denny's shipbuilding yard, Dumbarton. Here, as elsewhere, his real merit soon made itself felt, and he was being entrusted by the firm with increasingly responsible work.
On the outbreak of war he offered his services to the Admiralty, and in February, 1915, he was appointed to H.M.S. "Shannon," Second Cruiser Squadron, and was latterly attached to a torpedo flotilla.
He died as he would have wished to die, at the post of duty. He was in all respects a very gallant gentleman.
"The deep, lone sea hath one."
