John Alexander Wight was born on 28 November 1894, the son of William Wight, a commercial traveller, and his wife Jessie. In April 1911, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for National Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Bridgeton branch. He became a clerk there in 1914, and in May of that year moved to the bank's Glasgow Gallowgate branch.

During the First World War Wight left the bank to go on military service as a Private in the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). He was killed in action on the Somme on 29 October 1916. He was 21 years old.
