Francis was the son Patrick and Mary O'Brien, and husband of Mrs Bridget O'Brien of Hallside Street, Hutchesontown, Glasgow.
He enlisted in November 1914 and was sent to France in April 1915.
Francis was killed in action near Rue d'Ouvert, north-east of Givenchy on 18th June 1915. He has no known grave and is commemorated by name on the Le Touret Memorial, Pas-de-Calais, France.
