James was the younger son of Mr James Shearer, 62 Pollok Street, Kingston, Glasgow.
He was a teacher in Kinning Park School. He was a capable, keen and hardworking Non Commissioned Officer and was highly respected.
He enlisted in 1915. After training at Ripon and elsewhere he went to France in July 1916 as Corporal and was soon promoted to Sergeant. He was looking forward to taking a commission and had attended a course of training in France with a view to this end. In April 1918 he took part in the heavy fighting in the Armentieres sector.
He was killed by shell fire on 12th April 1918 near Neuve Eglise, France, while having a wound dressed. He was 27 years of age.
