At the beginning of 1915, William joined the 51st Canadian Infantry and after training at Edmonton his Battalion came to England and finished their training at Bramshot.

He was sent to France early in 1916 and was attached to the 48th Canadian Highlanders. After the attack on Vimy Ridge (which was part of the Second Battle of Arras) he was invalided home to England with trench fever. Returning to France a month or two later he rejoined his regiment and after taking part in some very stiff fighting he was badly gassed in March 1918 at the beginning of the big push. At the end of August of that year he once more returned to France. He was killed in action near Cambrai, France, on the 27 September 1918.

William was the youngest son Bailie Robert Sloan and Mrs Sloan who resided at 1 Sherbrooke Avenue, Pollokshields, Glasgow. When war broke out he was engaged in farming in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
