Good Food Glasgow to continue at the Broomielaw
Published: 31 May 2016
Lovers of street food in Glasgow will be able to enjoy fantastic dishes from around the world in the city centre for a little while longer with the news that Good Food Glasgow will continue at the Broomielaw.
This street food event came to the city centre each Saturday in the Merchant City for six weeks from 16 April and on each Friday in the Broomielaw from 22 April. This initial pilot period has proved so successful that the decision was taken to extend the stay of Good Food Glasgow on the banks of the Clyde.
As a result, colourful street food vehicles from operators in central Scotland will continue to offer everything from burgers, curries, American baking and gourmet sausage rolls to shellfish, fried chicken and vegan baking between 12pm - 7pm each Friday to bring a taste of the exotic to the Broomielaw.
Other culinary delights at Good Food Glasgow include Indian, Korean, Mexican and Scottish street food, as well as home baking, seafood, ice cream, crepes and gluten- & dairy-free food.
Councillor George Redmond, Executive Member for Job, Business and Investment at Glasgow City Council, said: "I am delighted to say that Good Food Glasgow will be at the Broomielaw for an extended period. These events have proven very successful, with people coming from outside the city to sample what's on offer, and we can continue to enjoy amazing street food down by the Clyde in the weeks to come."
An online survey on Good Food Glasgow carried out towards the end of the initial pilot period has demonstrated the success of the event: 98% of those who visited Good Food Glasgow would like to see it continue as a regular, weekly event; an average 4 out of 5 rating for quality of food, range of choices, cost, atmosphere and facilities was given; and 19% of those who visited came from outside Glasgow.
The city council had more than 2000 responses to a city centre survey in the summer of 2015, and a huge number of these expressed an interest in street food and street food events in what they wanted to see take place in the area. The idea for a pilot period for Good Food Glasgow grew from this response.
Good Food Glasgow is supported by Glasgow City Council, City Markets (Glasgow), Scottish Enterprise and the Community Food Fund.
